Why not put heat shrink around the universal there the pins are to keep them from gaining any kinetic energy before they start flying.....
If we are afraid about flying objects....What about pinions that are on 1/8 diam brushless shafts. Seen more broken shafts than broken pins on universals and dogbones.... :dntkw:

Yes, I am back to posting on "THE Forum" !

I have built many drivelines.... couplers, and dogbones, as a system. The materials used, as well as the tolerances, create an over-engineered system in the 60 X REALM. If a guard makes someone feel safer, great, its not that big a deal.

It must be pointed out, however, that there are several unaddressed serious safety issues that would warrant time spent on those..... Lax pitting rules PAST the 132' mark, guardrails that can't contain many wrecks, tires that have exploded in the pits and on the track on a fairly regular basis, catch personnel right in the path of 80 - 110 mph cars..I'm no advocate of others protecting my safety.....lets just look at the big safety picture here, not just on a single, very remote issue. Thanks!

Big E

Write down all potential risks
assess and prioritize (Likelihood / consequences) in a risk matrix
eliminate, re-work, avoid, minimize etc etc

The main goal is to work on High Risk which are items that fall into Very high likelihood of happening and severe consequences (usually multiple fatalities).

Suggestion - Why not implement a safe spectating distance from the track. That way you minimise the risk for all sorts of flying objects.

:02: Well heres my 2 cents, anything can happen and yes it is exposed on a dragster but since you only requier .030 to cover the shaft and car bodies are made of the same. Would it be safe to say that if your body covers the shaft you don't need to add a shaft cover??? :02:

OK EVERYONE, THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!

This is not something that is going to change.

This was put in for EVERYONE'S SAFETY.

We know that there is a somewhat low risk of one coming out, but there is a risk. We know that there are a LOT of other safety issues as well, some of you have mentioned already. ONE THING AT A TIME, if we were to make a ruling on all the potential safety issues and put them out there all at the same time, everyone would flip out. LOOK AT THE RESPONSE THIS ONE RULE HAS BROUGHT ON.

It's not like we are making you build a space shuttle or something like that. Its a piece on lexan and a few screws. It takes 5 minuets to make. Plus it's another place to put your sponsor's decals and or paint it up.

So please people calm yourselves with the criticism. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY.

Sunny, Tuslow, I will find out if its still required for full bodied cars.

Electric Direct Drive car racers I will also find out if its still required for your cars. I see your point (as with Rainmans pic) if you would call that a shaft.

So remember, this is not a joke, this is a rule, it is mandatory in the IMDRA for 2009. If you do not have a cover over your drive shaft you do not race until you do.

Have a safe and Happy Holidays to all.

Sorry but I thought my comments were constructive in the suggestions.

The HAZARD is objects flying and potentially hitting someone. (Not just the drive shaft)
That is the point I put forward.

I am all for a safe environment for racers and spectators.

I would just like to know what happened to IMDRA's policy of members having input (a vote) on new rules? Seems like the board just throws em out there.
